Liverpool vs Man City needs no hype. This will be the last time Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola meet in the Premier League, and it’s a game that could decide which one of them ultimately walks away with the trophy in May - and you can watch it from anywhere.
Both sides were in European action during the week, but neither were particularly exerted. Man City barely broke a sweat in seeing off FC Copenhagen on Wednesday. The next day Liverpool cruised past Sparta Prague. Reds fans will have got most pleasure from seeing Mo Salah return for the first time since being injured playing for Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Liverpool do though have a host of injuries. Not exactly what you need when trying to stop the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Erling Haaland and Phil Foden. He was imperious as the Citizens saw off Man Utd in the derby, continuing their relentless winning streak.
Liverpool are also in unstoppable form and Darwin Nunez is starting to show a killer touch in front of goal, Whoever wins this game will go ahead of Arsenal at the top of the EPL. Neither side will be pulling their punches and we should be in for a thriller.
After losing at Arsenal last month, the Reds have since won their last four matches, while City have not lost in the league since early December when they were beaten at Aston Villa. A win for either team would see them top of the table with Pep Guardiola's side going into the game trailing Liverpool by just a single point.
Both dropped a place in the league table on Saturday evening, however, after Arsenal moved to the top of the Premier League following their dramatic 2-1 win over Brentford. The Gunners now have won eight successive top-flight matches and will fancy their chances of pipping Liverpool and City to the title.
But the Arsenal fans, players and staff will be keeping a close eye on events at Anfield as Liverpool and City both go in search of three important points in their Premier League title bid.
Mohamed Salah was back in Liverpool's 5-1 beating of Sparta Prague on Thursday and should start against City.
Reds' boss Jurgen Klopp will be without the injured lot of Ben Doak, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Alisson Becker, Stefan Bajcetic, Thiago Alcantara, Curtis Jones, Ryan Gravenberch, Jayden Danns and Diogo Jota.
Forced out in the second half of the mid-week game, Ibrahima Konate may need to pass a late fitness test ahead of kick-off.
Matheus Nunes dislocated a finger in City's 3-1 victory against Copenhagen on Wednesday, leaving him among the doubtful starters along with Jeremy Doku for Sunday's game.
Julian Alvarez could benefit from Doku's possible absence, with the likes of Phil Foden, Kyle Walker, Bernardo Silva, Kevin De Bruyne and Nathan Ake set to be recalled from the first whistle. Meanwhile, Jack Grealish is sure to miss out on account of a muscle injury.
Although Arsenal now lead the standings after their late victory over Brentford on Saturday night, Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola are set to fight for the title once again after a pair of epic battles that went to the final day in both 2019 and 2022. With Klopp leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, the Reds out are to win their second title under the German, while Guardiola and City are aiming to win an unprecedented fourth in a row.
The rivalry between the managers has continued to be respectful, but Trent Alexnader-Arnold’s comments in the build-up to this afternoon’s blockbuster meeting could inflame tensions between the teams after a series of red-hot meetings in recent years.
Under Guardiola, City have never beaten Liverpool in front of a crowd at Anfield, and Klopp will want Liverpool to produce a typically ferocious performance in order to return to the top of the table.
The Reds are leading the standings with 63 points, but City are only one point behind, while Arsenal are in the fight with 61. Jurgen Klopp’s men are in great shape this season, losing only two games in the Premier League, while in Europe they look unstoppable. They thrashed Sparta Prague 1-5 in the Europa League round of 16 first-leg match and advanced to the FA Cup quarterfinals after easily beating Southampton.
Manchester City are also enjoying a good term so far. As expected, they are in the fight for the domestic title and they are already in the Champions League quarterfinals after dismantling Copenhagen. Like Liverpool, they comfortably took care of their opponents Luton in the FA Cup and their confidence seems to be back.
Darwin Nunez scored twice to help Liverpool rout Sparta 5-1 and take a big step closer to the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday.
Nunez’s right-footed shot from 25 meters (yards) flew past goalkeeper Peter Vindahl to double Liverpool’s early lead after Alexis Mac Allister’s penalty in Prague in the first leg of the round of 16.
The Uruguay international’s first strike of the evening was the 1,000th Liverpool goal scored under manager Jürgen Klopp, whose team will host the second leg next week at Anfield.
In first-half stoppage time, Nunez let a pass from Mac Allister bounce in the right corner of the area before firing inside the far post for his second.
Nunez scored in the ninth minute of stoppage time Saturday to earn Liverpool a 1-0 win at Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.
Mac Allister sent Vindahl the wrong way in the sixth minute to convert a penalty awarded after the Argentine was downed in the area by Asger Sørensen.
Conor Bradley reduced the lead to 3-1 with an own goal a minute after he came on as substitute at the start of the second half. Luis Díaz restored the three-goal advantage seven minutes later.
Striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang netted from the spot and added one more for his 33rd career goal in the Europa League to improve his own competition record. Marseille also got a goal from Jordan Veretout and own goal from Yerson Mosquera.
Olivier Giroud, Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored a goal each at the end of the first half to put AC Milan in control 3-1 over 10-man Slavia Prague at San Siro. Ivan Schranz scored one more for Slavia before Christian Pulisic clinched a 4-2 win for the Italian powerhouse.
In the third-tier competition, Aston Villa held Ajax 0-0 in Amsterdam. Both teams finished the game with 10 men after Ajax midfielder Tristan Gooijer and Villa defender Ezri Konsa received their second yellow card in the last 10 minutes.
City trail Liverpool by a point, and know victory will see them leapfrog Jurgen Klopp's side into first. Arsenal overtook both sides on Saturday to move top by a point, but have played a game more. City take on Arsenal in their next Premier League fixture at the end of the month - so these two games are season-defining.
Pep Guardiola will be without Jack Grealish, while Jeremy Doku is a doubt. Guardiola rested a number of players in the Champions League against FC Copenhagen this week, but insisted that he made changes due to tiredness rather than the Liverpool trip on the horizon.
City's record at Anfield is woeful, with only one win since 2003, and Guardiola has only overseen one win in his time at City. This will be the final time Guardiola and Klopp meet in the Premier League, with the Liverpool boss stepping down at the end of the season.
